Clos des Goisses 2009

Clos des Goisses 2009

Clos des Goisses is one of the prestige cuvees with the smalles production that ranges from 15000 to 30000 bottles per year. It is also one of the most famous single terroir champagnes alongside Krugs Clos du Mesnil. The stonewalled 5,5 ha vineyard is a steep soutfacting slope in Mareuil sur Ay. It is in fact the steepest slope in champagne with almost pure chalk soils. So it is one of the terroirs that combine optimum ripening conditions and rich champagnes with an intense minerality.Since many have heard of Clos des Goisses but few have tried it, we thought we open a bottle of the 2009 for our blog. 2009 is one of the Best Clos des Goisses for drinking today and perhaps the wine of the vintage. It has an exceptional ripeness, reflected in the 13 % alcohol but perfect balance.

The nose is marked by complex nuances of nuts, specially walnuts, baked apple, lemon, dried apricot and bread. The palate is very silky and rich but finely layered and with an intense mineral core. There are discreet notes from the vinification in oak barrels. This is beginning to drink really well and will develop for another 2 decades. Vinified without malolactic vinification Clos des Goisses can be rather acidic at this age. But the 2009 is beautifully balanced already. There are walnut and nougat aromas that are very complex and blend beautifully with baked apple, lemon, apricot fruit that is discreet and underpinned by strong iodine, saline minerality. This is a unique with a unique style that provides endless complexity and beautiful harmony.
