Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2019

Cos d'Estounerl has made an excellent 2019. The grand vin has concentration, a complex and seductive aromatic profile, a good structure of refined tannins and an overall balance that makes it the best Cos'Estournel for decades even if 2016 is also very good. 

William Kelley 97+ robertparker.com The 2019 Cos d'Estournel has turned out brilliantly, exhibiting aromas of minty cassis, sweet wild berries and wild plums mingled with hints of spices, loamy soil and potpourri. Full-bodied, broad and enveloping, it's polished and seamless, its ample chassis of fine, velvety tannin entirely concealed in its deep core of succulent, crunchy fruit. Beautifully integrated at this early stage, the last decade has witnessed a number of changes at this address, including a trend toward less aggressively late picking, cooler fermentations and élevage with fewer rackings and more moderate percentages of less heavily toasted new oak: in 2019, the results speak for themselves. 

James Suckling 99 jamessuckling.com This is so aromatic with blackcurrants, black berries and raspberries. Pure fruit, together with coffee and nutmeg. Really fresh and clean with bright spices. Full-bodied, yet reserved and tight with fantastic structure. So long. This is a great Cos for the cellar. A real benchmark for the true character. Needs at least five or six years to open and come around. Try after 2029 

Neil Martin 96-98 vinous.com ...It delivers gorgeous, very pure scents of blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and just a hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, pitch perfect acidity and a satin like texture... Cos d'Estournal hatte sich mit sehr reifen Trauben, dem immer schon hohen Merlotanteil, sehr kleinen Erträgen, hoher Extraktion und mit viel neuer, stark getoasteter Eiche weit weg von seinem Terroir entwickelt. Anfangs  hatte man mit diesem Stil Erfolg, aber es wurde vielen Bordeaux Freunden dannl langweilig und auf das zweite oder dritte Glas hatten sie schon keine große Lust mehr. Überspitzt könnte man sagen: Cos d'Estournel wurde zur Karikatur eines Weines, der in einer Blindprobe vieler junger Weine, die den Gaumen ermüden, so viel Gas gibt, dass er auf die 100 Punkte kommt. In Schritten vollzog man eine Korrektur und konnte schon mit dem 2016er überzeugen. Der 2019 ist so ausgewogen und auch dem Terroir entsprechend, dass er sich zu einem neuen Stilmodell entwickeln kann.
