Jacques Selosse Chemin de Chalons
Chemin de Chalons is Jaques Selosses vineyard in Cramant and it is his rarest champagne from the terroir series. Anselme Selosse bases wines already have plenty of flavor from vinification in oak and not just from long lees aging. They can resemble white burgundies with an extra sparkle in their youth but this was disgorged in April 2013 and has lost its chardonnay aromas by now. Caramel, fruit preserved in rum, nougat, hazelnut, acacia blossom and lavender honey are among the complex aromas on the nose and the palate. It is powerful, mouth filling and the palate is smooth with very fine mousse. It is a very satisfying experience but I would have preferred it 5 years ago as the rich spicy notes completely dominate. Still it is a delicious champagne packed with flavours. We were in the mood for elegance and mineral freshness and opened a 1981 Heidsieck blanc de blancs.
