Cuvée William Deutz 2013

Style and vinification

Richard Juhlin writes on his website Champagneclub.com: “One of the most stylish Champagnes of all categories. One of the true stars of the vintage. Red fruit, gianduja and earthy-spicy notes characterise this Champagne, which is already so much fun to drink now.”

Even though Pinot Noir dominates, Deutz impresses with elegance, finesse and precise minerality. The mousse is particularly fine and delicate.

Unlike Roederer, Deutz consistently uses stainless steel tanks for vinification and ageing. The roasted aromas are not created by wood, but by long lees ageing (autolysis), which gives the Champagne notes of toast, freshly ground coffee, roasted hazelnuts and almonds. The extended ageing provides an exceptional creaminess and texture that harmonises perfectly with the smoky Pinot Noir notes and the lemony freshness of the Chardonnay.

It is a Champagne of classic structure, complexity and depth that, despite all the house-typical elegance, still possesses plenty of body and intensity.

Key facts

  • 62 % Pinot Noir from Ay, Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay
  • 34 % Chardonnay from Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant and Villers-Marmery
  • 4 % Pinot Meunier from Pierry (Premier Cru)
  • Dosage 8 g/l
  • Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks

Ratings

96(93) Richard Juhlin champagneclub.com As usual a classic and delicious William Deutz right from the start. So invitingly rounded and lush without being too intrusive. Beautiful red fruit with a dominance of strawberries as it should be in Aÿ. Backed by a freshly baked bread, chocolate and nougat notes as well as honeysuckle and leather. Velvet and one of the most stylish champagnes in all categories. One of the vintage's real hits.
