Philipponnat has only been around for a little over 100 years. The family sold the house, but Charles Philipponnat still runs it today. The foundation of its success is high-quality grapes. The style is fruity and charming. Half of the vintage wines are aged in oak. The house's starting point is the Clos des Goisses, a five and a half hectare single vineyard. Along with the Clos du Mesnil and the Côte aux Enfants in Ay, it is a contender for the best vineyard in Champagne. The Clos des Goisses is the warmest vineyard, but the ultra-fine chalky soil gives the Champagnes a fresh and delicate touch despite their power. While Clos des Goisses is better than even Dom Perignon, it is demanding because it develops very slowly.
