Key facts about the House.

Perrier-Jouët is a traditional Champagne house founded in 1811 in Épernay by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier upon his marriage to Rose Adélaïde Jouët. He quickly built up a thriving export business, and his son Charles became a supplier to Napoleon III, the Belgian royal household and Queen Victoria. The Maison is renowned for its finely fruited, elegant style with a strong focus on Chardonnay, which lends the wines finesse and complexity. Since 1959, Perrier-Jouët has belonged to the GH Mumm group, which is part of the Pernod Ricard Group. Over time, the house has changed hands several times – from Mumm to Seagram, then to Allied Domecq and finally to the current owners, Pernod Ricard. Probably due to the relatively small size of the house, the refined, subtle and at the same time charming style has always been preserved, rather than trying to cater to mainstream tastes and expand aggressively. Perrier-Jouët’s reputation among connoisseurs is based on the unique prestige cuvée Belle Époque, which is famous and highly sought-after worldwide.

Vineyards and holdings

Perrier-Jouët owns around 40 hectares of vineyards, mainly in the Grand Cru sites of the Côte des Blancs (Cramant, Avize), with legendary parcels such as Bourons Leroy and Bourons du Midi, which supply the rare Belle Époque Blanc de Blancs. The style of these Cramant Chardonnays is so dominant that the Chardonnay proportion in Perrier-Jouët wines is often quickly overestimated. In addition, the house sources grapes from other selected crus of the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne. The elevated sites and chalky soils shape the wines’ floral finesse and mineral depth.

Style

The style of Perrier-Jouët is subtle, fruity and elegant – strongly influenced by Chardonnay. Typical aromas include white peach, citrus fruits, white flowers and almonds. The Champagnes display a balanced structure between freshness, refinement and complexity, without appearing opulent. The texture is creamy, with a fine, delicate mousse. The cuvées are harmoniously composed, based on reserve wines with extended lees ageing, which promotes depth and complexity.

Cellar techniques

Perrier-Jouët combines modern cellar technology with traditional methods. Alcoholic fermentation takes place under temperature control in stainless steel and partly in wooden barrels, in order to preserve aromatic diversity and structure. Malolactic fermentation is carried out as standard to soften acidity and achieve suppleness. Lees ageing generally lasts at least three years, and significantly longer for prestige cuvées such as Belle Époque. Recently, the historic winery was renovated and equipped with oak barrels used specifically for Chardonnay, to emphasise floral and spicy notes.

Top cuvée: Belle Époque

Belle Époque is the iconic prestige cuvée of Perrier-Jouët, whose origins date back to 1902. In 1969, the Art Nouveau artist Émile Gallé designed the famous anemone motif on the bottle – today the symbol of the house. The cuvée combines around 50% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier and matures for over five years on the lees. It stands for the highest elegance, complexity and floral finesse, captured in a harmonious, silky texture.

The extravagant bottle design was created in 1902 through a collaboration between Henri Gallice (then President of Perrier-Jouët) and Émile Gallé, founder of the École de Nancy and a pioneer of Art Nouveau. The artistic bottles fell into oblivion until they were rediscovered, completely dust-covered, in 1964 by Pierre Ernst, a partner of the house. Chef de Cave André Baveret and Michel Budin decided to use them for a new prestige cuvée. In 1972, the 1964 vintage was presented at the Belle Époque restaurant Maxim’s – and was completely sold out immediately upon its official market launch in 1973.

Even today, Perrier-Jouët produces comparatively small quantities from old vines. Particularly influential for Belle Époque are the outstanding sites in Cramant. Chardonnay accounts for around half of the cuvée, Pinot Noir for the other part, complemented by a small proportion of Pinot Meunier.

Historical and cultural significance

As early as 1861, Perrier-Jouët became an official supplier to the British Queen Victoria, and later also to the French imperial court. Eight cellar masters have preserved the style over two centuries, including Hervé Deschamps (until 2020) and Séverine Frerson (since 2020, the first female cellar master of the house). Precision, restraint and artisanal perfection are core values of the house, reflected in every Champagne.
