Deutz Cuvée William Deutz is among our favourite Champagnes. While Pinot Noir takes the lead in the blend (60%, with 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier), the wine is defined not by sheer power but by its hallmark elegance and finesse. A precise thread of minerality runs through the palate, lending clarity and lift. The mousse is exceptionally fine and delicate, underscoring the sophistication and refinement that make this cuvée a true standout.
In contrast to Roederer, Deutz relies entirely on stainless steel for vinification and maturation. As a result, the toasty aromas do not come from contact with oak, but from extended lees aging (autolysis). This process imparts delicate notes of toast, freshly ground coffee, and roasted hazelnuts and almonds to the Champagnes. In the case of William Deutz, the prolonged maturation brings remarkable creaminess and density, which harmonize beautifully with the smoky Pinot Noir accents and the vibrant citrus freshness of Chardonnay.
The Champagne house Deutz was founded in 1838 by two Germans from Aachen: William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann. Although still young, William brought with him valuable expertise from his time at the prestigious house of Bollinger. Together, they settled in Aÿ, in the heart of Champagne, with the ambition from the very beginning to create wines of the highest quality.
During the First World War, the German branch in Haguenau, Alsace, was confiscated. After Alsace was returned to France, the company was divided: Deutz-Geldermann moved its base to Breisach, while William Deutz remained in Aÿ. In 1993, the house finally passed into majority ownership of Louis Roederer.
