Bollinger R.D. 1979 is the pinnacle of all great Bollinger champagnes
1979 is the best RD today, just ahead of 1988. Well-preserved magnums of R.D. 1973 are also at this level. The aromas are stunning: immediately present are nougat, hazelnut, chocolate, orange peel, dried apricot, lemon, freshly ground coffee and smoky gunpowder. New nuances can be discovered for hours. The palate is very full. Particularly striking is the mineral freshness, which gives the palate tension right into the long finish. R.D. 1979 is one of those champagnes that leave a deep impression on the memory. Never has the powerful, structured Bollinger style been interpreted more elegantly and seductively.
When should I drink Bollinger D.R. 1979?
Bollinger R.D. 1979 is at its peak. The bottle offered by Alfavin is in perfect condition with an unusually light colour for its age and will provide drinking pleasure for another ten to fifteen years. The ideal time will of course depend on personal preference. Today, the fruity elements are still an important part of the flavour palette. In the future, the nutty flavours will become increasingly dominant. The perlage also decreases and it becomes more and more vinous.
The 1979 vintage in Champagne
The 1979 vintage is considered great. As is so often the case, this view is too generalised. The harvest was very late, in the first and second weeks of October. Only the best vineyards with old vines and good radition exposure had ripe grapes at harvest time. 1979 shares with 2008 and 1988 the characteristic of a long vegetation phase. The summer had moderate temperatures. Other great years such as 1975 and 1976 were, which leads to early ripening. The cooler years are even more complex in terms of flavour. However, 1979 has high yields due to regular rainfall and good growing conditions. When there are many grapes on the vine, the plant takes longer to reach full ripeness. Full ripeness means that the phenols in the grape skins ripen. Many 1979 champagnes have unripe, vegetable flavours. Pinot Noir in particular shows aromas of raw mushrooms. In addition, many 1979 champagnes are thin and sour.
