Champagne Fleur de Miraval – The New Cult Rosé at Alfavin
Fleur de Miraval is an ambitious Champagne brand exclusively focused on producing Rosé Champagnes. Founded in 2019 by Brad Pitt, the Perrin family (Château de Beaucastel), and Rodolphe Péters (Champagne Pierre Péters), the partnership leverages Péters’ expertise, particularly with his single vineyard Les Chétillons, making him one of the most renowned grower-producers of the Côte des Blancs.
House Style
While many producers emphasize red fruit aromas or even strawberry and raspberry pastry in their Rosés, Fleur de Miraval focuses on the complexity of older Chardonnay wines, reductive toasty notes from extended lees aging, and subtle spice from oak maturation. The Pinot Noir still wines add only a light fruity and floral lift.
Quoting the house mission statement: "We wanted to focus on a champagne with the complexity you get in a fully mature Chardonnay with its notes of brioche and butter; while at the same time being lifted by a young Pinot Noir that adds excitement, liveliness and freshness as well as a lovely color, intense and elegant at the same time."
Exclusively Rosé (ER) from Fleur de Miraval is characterised by:
- The chalky, intense minerality of the finest Chardonnay terroirs in Champagne, with notes of citrus and white flowers.
- Complex aromas from lees aging, reserve wines, and oak maturation: floral notes of roses & geranium, blood orange, peach, cherry, cinnamon, vanilla, and subtle smoky nuances.
- Fine perlage and a creamy texture on the palate.
Vineyards and Viticulture
- Grapes: 75% Chardonnay from 30-year-old vines in the Grand Crus of Cramant, Avize, Oger, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger; 25% Pinot Noir from 1er Cru Vertus.
- Viticulture: Biodynamic practices with a focus on biodiversity and sustainable management.
Cellar Techniques and Vinification
- Fermentation: Partly in stainless steel tanks, partly in used oak barrels (Burgundy origin) for structure and subtle spice.
- Malolactic Fermentation: Generally not performed to preserve freshness and acidity.
- Lees Aging: The E.R. matures for 4–5 years on the lees.
- Dosage: Approximately 4 g/L – Extra Brut.
- Reserve Wines: Réserve Perpétuelle, initiated in 2007.
Conclusion
In just four releases, Fleur de Miraval has established a new prestige Rosé, ideal for lovers of fine, complex, mineral-driven Extra Brut Rosés. Unlike Alexandra or Krug Rosé, which are often enjoyed as a dessert alternative, the E.R. works beautifully as an aperitif or paired with an entire meal. At Alfavin, you can purchase the E.R. 2, now particularly harmonious after several years of bottle aging.
