Description
  • One of the absolute highlights of the entire R.D. series
  • Complex maturation aromas: apricot, nougat, truffle, gunpowder

Bollinger R.D. 1988

Key Highlights

Certainly one of the highlights of the entire Récemment Dégorgé series, it already displays the aromas of many years of cellar aging: dried apricots, nougat, truffle, and smoky notes reminiscent of gunpowder. These are carried by a crystal-clear minerality that enlivens the silky palate.

With good storage, it will last another two decades. It will become even more chocolatey and nutty.

Key facts

  • 72% Pinot Noir, 28% Chardonnay
  • 66% Grand Cru, 34% Premier Cru
  • Aÿ, Bouzy, Verzenay, Avenay, Tauxières, Mareuil, Grauves, Cuis, Cramant, Avize
  • Aged in used oak barrels of own production
  • Malolactic fermentation blocked
  • Disgorged: 29 June 1999
  • Dosage: 6 g/l

The 1988 vintage in Champagne

2008 has often been compared to 1988, but the weather pattern in 1988 was significantly later. After a late flowering, a cool, rainy summer followed. Only from late August did warm, sunny, dry weather save the vintage. Perfect ripeness, small grapes with concentrated juice and high acidity values come together.

The 1980s in Champagne were blessed with many great vintages. 1988, together with 1985, is the most consistently great year.

Ratings

Richard Juhlin champagneclub.com 96(96) Here is the classic Bollinger style with hazelnut, bread, mushrooms and smoke. However, the wine has hardly won on its late disgorgement. It will be exciting to see when this wine reaches its peak. Very delicious and nutty on magnum, but completely knotted and unredeemed on jeroboam. Goes from clarity to clarity as one of the best Bollinger vintages.
