Personal advice
The Special Club is a cuvée with 30% Chardonnay, but it is dominated by Pinot Noir. Like Aÿ, Bouzy has the body of warm south-facing slopes. However, the soil has a higher chalk content and more mineral freshness. In a way, it stands between Aÿ and Verzenay.
The vines are on average 80 years old. Production is traditional in concrete vats. In 2023, Chef de Cave Cristian Forget retired. Christian learned the trade directly from Paul Bara and worked under him for decades. His successor Grégory Baert wants to preserve the traditional cuvées like Special Club and Comtesse Marie but also expand with more cuvées aged in new oak.
For the 2008 vintage, the drinking window is slowly opening, but it is best to wait a few more years to enjoy this classic over decades.
