The bouquet is very present immediately after opening: lemon, tarte au citron and roasted almonds pour out of the glass. The palate is dominated by lemon, grapefruit and brioche, followed by roasted nuts and almonds on the finish. The Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 2008 is opulent. The palate is very full, especially in the centre. The racy acidity and chalky minerals provide freshness. At the moment it still has a subtle fruity sweetness, which will diminish with further ageing. It still has good potential to develop into a perfect Blanc de Blancs.
Pol Roger is known for its cuvées, which are created around Pinot Noir. Since its introduction with the 1975 vintage, the Winston Churchill cuvée has been considered the best champagne of the house and one of the best in Champagne. A Blanc de Blancs has been offered as Blanc de Chardonnay since the 1959 vintage. The last vintage was 1996 and since then the name Blanc de Chardonnay has only appeared on the labels in exceptional cases. Instead, the usual designation Blanc de Blancs is used. There are some exceptional Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs from vintages before 1959: the Réserve Chardonnay 1914 has a good reputation. The Grauves 1928 is legendary and the only champagne to be awarded 100 points by Richard Juhlin. Pol Roger produces an unusually lush, full-bodied Blanc de Blancs. We are most likely to find similar Chardonnay Champagnes in the Montagne de Reims. Pol Roger uses grapes from the Grand Crus Chouilly, Oger, Avize, Cramant and Oiry. In some vintages, such as 1979, the Blanc de Blancs reaches the level of Winston Churchill.
