In the warm 2015 vintage, the Winston Churchill has lush fruit and buttery, chocolaty notes. What is impressive, however, is how the full, silky palate is pervaded by a fine, mineral tension, which is probably due less to the warm Pinot Noir site Ay than to the cooler grands crus Verzy and Verzenay. It will reach its peak in 20 years but, as is typical of Pol Roger, it will be hard to find the discipline to resist this seductive champagne for that long.

The medium-bodied palate has a wonderfully textured complexity and acid freshness that radiates throughout. It finishes long, toasty, and certainly invites another sip. A joy to drink. The bottle tasted was disgorged September 2022 and finished with a seven gram per liter dosage.

Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned.
