Comtes is the creamiest and most attractive of all Blanc de Blancs, and 2014, following the more mineral-driven 2013, fully embraces this style. It was disgorged just a few months ago and will arrive in time for Christmas.

For Comtes de Champagne, the grapes come exclusively from the most prestigious Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Le Mesnil, Chouilly, Cramant, and Oger. Taittinger is able to draw on its own vineyards, as the house owns 288 hectares of vines. Vinification follows a classic approach. Since 1988, Taittinger has also experimented with oak barrels, about one-third of which are new. However, their use in Comtes de Champagne is minimal and plays only a supporting role.

The image shows a different vintage.

Taittinger has long been associated with a refined, sensuous style of Champagne, and even its vintage releases are known to reach maturity relatively early. Within this portfolio, Comtes de Champagne holds a unique, almost jewel-like position. Although the house had been producing vintage Blanc de Blancs prior to its release, it was with the 1952 vintage that Taittinger introduced its prestige cuvée, Comtes de Champagne.

The inspiration for this wine comes from Thibault IV, Count of Champagne and King of Navarre, from the House of Blois. His historic seal graces the bottle to this day. While Salon was already producing in very small quantities, Comtes de Champagne was the first prestige Blanc de Blancs to be released on a broader scale, predating Dom Ruinart, which debuted with the 1959 vintage.
