This Pinot Noir from old vines in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay was vinified for 10 months in new oak and has zero dosage – yet in the beautifully ripe 2018 vintage, this is far less noticeable than it might be in other years. The aroma profile is highly inviting: cherry, gingerbread, almond, damson plum, overripe apples, toasted bread, walnut, along with forest floor, mushrooms and a subtle touch of oak spice. The full-bodied palate is silky. This Champagne is beautifully balanced, with emphasis on weight and concentration. As I write these lines, I've just decided I must open a bottle tonight. Richard Juhlin scores it 91 points.
De Sousa owns very old vines that are tended with great dedication in all weathers. Éric de Sousa was a perfectionist who was tragically taken far too soon. His two daughters and son are doing everything to honour his legacy. This Blanc de Noirs is a rare, limited cuvée – 100% oak-aged, zero dosage – and showcases the depth and elegance of Ambonnay Pinot Noir in its purest form.
