Dom Pérignion 2010 - a great champagne from a difficult year
You would never guess the difficult weather conditions of the year when tasting this wine: Mango, pineapple and lemon pour from the glass, rounded off by ginger, curry and freshly ground coffee, with a hint of mint in the background.
A lively mineral tension hovers beneath the silky palate, which continues through to the long, iodised finish. Exotic fruit meets spicy notes of vanilla, ginger and smoky toast.
How the challenge of 2010 was mastered
Everything looked promising after a warm, sunny summer, when heavy rainfall in August and September caused rot, which particularly affected the Pinot Noir. Vincent Chaperon has the courage to wait. He sacrifices a large proportion of the grapes that are thrown away during the harvest or on the sorting table. But the small quantity that remains is of great quality. The Pinot Noirs from the large Verzenay vineyard are particularly perfect. Nevertheless, an unusually high proportion of Chardonnay (55%) is included in the cuvée. The conditions on the Côte de Blancs were good. Nevertheless, the quantities are much smaller than in 2008, 2009 and 2012 - a bold step, but the result speaks for itself. Dom Perignon 2010 competes with the 2012 as the most delicious of the young vintages for immediate enjoyment.
