Chateau d'Issan 2019 has a lot of power and concentration for a Margaux. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon provides a good tannin structure, which ensures high ageing potential. The 30% Merlot is low when compared to previous vintages. The harvest took place from 25 September to 11 October. Each individual plot was vinified separately in temperature-controlled steel fermenters with gentle extraction. The wine was then aged for 19 months in barriques, with 50% new oak.

Wine has been produced at Issan since 1152. The current château was built in the 17th century and the estate is surrounded by a moat, giving it a particularly picturesque and historic character.

Château d'Issan has been classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé since 1855. The terroir, characterised by deep gravel soils, shapes the elegant, long-lasting style of the wine. Around 53 hectares are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

The wines are characterised by finesse, aroma (black fruits, floral notes, spices), silky tannins, harmonious structure and high ageing potential. Vintages such as 1900 are now legendary and are considered the hallmarks of the classic Margaux style.

Since the end of the 1990s, the winery has experienced another significant boost in quality under Emmanuel Cruse. Young wines are accessible but show great ageing potential.

Antonio Galloni Vinous 95  The 2019 d'Issan is a beautifully complex wine. The aromatics alone are beguiling, but that is just the beginning. Readers will find a powerful, layered Issan that is going to need at least a few years to start shedding some of its formidable tannin. Hints of dried rose petal, mint, blood organge, spice and star anise give the 2019 its gorgeous, beautifully lifted personality. Give this a few years, and watch what happens.
Neil Martin Vinous 95 ...The harmonious palate is very well blanced, with pliant tannins, perfectly judged acidity, and an engaging build in the mouth. Yes, this has put on a bit of weight during its time in barrel, and it should give 30 to 40 years of drinking pleasure. Excellent.
