2004 is now in a great drinking window and Krug is even a little bit better than Comtes, Dom Perignon, La Grande Année and RD. The fruit is still in the foreground; the champagne is only at the beginning of its drinking maturity. For the charming, elegant year 2004, it has an astonishing amount of substance, intensity and depth. Nevertheless, it is an elegant champagne that delights with an incredibly silky palate and endlessly complex flavours.

The year 2004 was characterised by a cool, even climate with ideal ripening conditions, resulting in elegant, balanced and particularly precise wines. The yields were rather high. Krug Vintage is made from very small yields from old vines, making it a real exception for the year. It is concentrated and full-bodied. The flavours fill the palate to the very last corner of the mouth.

The nose reveals aromas of dried fruit, citrus, marzipan, biscuit, honey and slightly nutty notes. On the palate, the champagne is precise and fresh, with great elegance, mineral depth and a long, multi-layered finish.

The blend consists of around 39% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir and 24% Meunier. Krug Vintage 2004 was disgorged in 2017 after maturing on the lees for over 12 years.

The Krug Vintage 2004 is considered one of the most accessible and harmonious vintage champagnes of the house in recent decades

Ratings

98 Antonio Galloni vinous.com The 2004 vintage is a gorgeous Champagne that is just beginning to enter its first plateau of maturity. Dried flowers, brioche, mint, marzipan, tangerine peel and spice lend notable nuance throughout. A hint of reactions adds intrigue. As always the 2004 is a linear, focused Champagne endowed with terrific energy. It is impeccably done. ..
